Making the choice to file for bankruptcy is not a moral or emotional decision, it is a financial decision. Many of the most successful people in history have filed for bankruptcy before making it big. Attorney Kevin M. Schmidt understood this simple principle better than most lawyers, and it guided him in treating every client with dignity and respect. His commitment to helping hard-working people reach a brighter future motivated him to establish a new kind of bankruptcy law firm in Northwest Indiana, one dedicated to excellent service and exceptional results.

For more than twenty years, Mr. Schmidt represented thousands of people in their bankruptcy cases, offering candid but compassionate guidance. Going well beyond simply filing the paperwork, he would often help struggling families gain a better understanding of their finances, including monthly income, monthly expenses, total debt, and household cash flow. As his reputation in the area grew, clients from as far away as South Bend began to seek out his services. To better serve more people, Mr. Schmidt formed a legal partnership with Porter County bankruptcy attorney Dan L. Whitten, giving clients the advantage of a second office location plus the benefit of both attorneys’ experience and bankruptcy law knowledge. The partnership was a success due in large part to the shared goal that both attorneys have – helping people resolve their financial issues efficiently and live a happier life.

In 2021, Mr. Schmidt passed away, leaving behind numerous family and friends and a strong legacy of helping others. Dedicated to his clients until the very end, Mr. Schmidt took steps before his passing to ensure that his firm would continue on with the assistance of Mr. Whitten. Together, they reviewed and discussed the firm’s caseload and client needs at length, allowing Mr. Whitten to continue the firm’s work without interruption.

Today, Dan L. Whitten and the staff of Whitten & Whitten are continuing to serve the people of Northwest Indiana with Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy representation while upholding the firm’s mission of excellent service.
